Robert Mitchell and Family

The Scottish Fisheries Museum was founded in 1969 in a series of historic buildings connected to the fishing industry. On display are nationally recognised collections showing the development of the industry from prehistoric times to the present.

The archives held by the museum include personal records, business papers, published reports and registers, and photographs. They cover a wide range of topics including working life at sea and on shore, the changing fishing communities, overall developments in the industry, the gear, and the boats, and the histories of individual vessels. Some records (such as boat registers and photographs) cover the whole of Scotland or the UK, while others (such as the majority of business records and personal papers) are more local to Fife.

The records provide a wealth of information to show how aspects of the fishing industry worked and give varied insights into the daily lives of fishermen and workers. Together with the museum objects, the archives are an extremely valuable resource for family historians in gaining a greater understanding of their ancestor’s lives.
