The archives held by the Scottish Maritime Museum include Company records from builders and shipping companies, including builders such as the Fairlie Yacht Slip company, Scott Lithgow, and John Brown Engineering, and complete records of the Denny Ship Model Experiment Tank, including technical data for all ships tested at the tank.

Other museum records include seamen’s papers, continuous certificates of discharge and wartime mariner’s documents. The museum also holds a large collection of original ship and yacht plans and drawings. These collections provide insight into the lives of sailors, engineers and shipbuilders during the heyday of Scottish ship and yacht building.

The Museum’s photographic collections cover shipbuilding on the Clyde and the Ayrshire coast, engineering and working lives. Photographic collections also give an encyclopaedic overview of shipping around Scotland, with over 17,000 individual ship photographs.
