The Scottish Railway Preservation Society is the operator of the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway, situated on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, sixteen miles west of Edinburgh. The recreated Victorian railway environment at Bo'ness is home to a large collection of historic Scottish railway locomotives and vehicles, some of which are displayed in the Scottish Railway Exhibition, while steam and diesel hauled trains operate every weekend from Easter until October and daily in July and August.

The collection represents Scotland's railway operators, main line and industrial, and also Scotland's locomotive and rolling stock building industry.

Train services terminate at Birkhill, where fireclay for the linings of Scotland's industrial furnaces was extracted, and visitors can explore the underground workings of the Mine.

The varied archives at Bo'ness include timetables, photographs, maps and tickets. While staff records are largely absent, many of the Company records do survive, in the possession of National Archives Scotland.
